Curriculum Sequence
Please click on the icons below to view the curriculum sequence for each Key Stage. The curriculum sequence will show you what students should know and be able to do in the subject, alongside the key ‘tier 3’ subject specific vocabulary that your child needs to understand to allow them to access the deeper curriculum. The curriculum sequence also lists the ‘key assessment questions’ each term/half term that your child will be asked during assessments to help your child to prepare effectively, as well as the ‘disciplinary rigour’ which explains the methods, conventions, rules and practices that are specific to that subject.
Curriculum Implementation
All MFL lessons are delivered by subject specialists, who are able to provide a high quality of education by modelling and explaining key concepts, while addressing common misconceptions. Vocabulary and grammar retrieval and retention are focus areas for every lesson, with starter activities designed to retrieve prior knowledge. All pupils have knowledge organisers in their books in the form of sentence builders and are encouraged to refer to these regularly in class and for revision. Emphasis is on communication in the target language, with in-class focus on phonics and giving pupils the opportunity to practise speaking. The curriculum is sequenced to ensure regular retrieval of key grammar concepts which can be applied to different topics. Our curriculum implementation is carried out with a view to promoting self-efficacy in language learning.
Pupils are encouraged to engage in extra-curricular enrichment activities to improve their cultural understanding and interest in the countries where French and German are studied. As well as extracurricular visits abroad, pupils have the opportunity to engage in a regular French club, as well as activities put on by the MFL department at key dates in the year, such as European Day of Languages, German Unity Day and Bastille Day.
End of Course Assessment
The examination board used is AQA: www.aqa.org.uk
The examination is made up of 4 skills as follows:
Listening (25%) terminal examination at foundation or higher tier
Reading (25%) terminal examination at foundation or higher tier
Speaking (25%) terminal assessment led by teacher at foundation or higher tier
Writing (25%) terminal examination at foundation or higher tier
Foundation grades available are 5-1 and higher grades available are 9-4

Every student has a TEAMS page for MFL where they can find in-class sentence builders for a unit of work, as well as instructions for home learning tasks.
KS4 pupils are encouraged to purchase CGP guides to complement their revision.
