Literacy
At St Thomas More, our evidence-informed literacy strategy is planned to ensure that every pupil develops the confidence and competence to read, write, speak and listen effectively across the curriculum.
Informed by evidence on disciplinary literacy, we recognise that literacy is the responsibility of every subject: pupils are explicitly taught the vocabulary, reading strategies and writing structures they need to access and communicate knowledge in each discipline.
We aim to develop fluent, critical readers and confident, purposeful writers, while identifying and supporting pupils who need additional literacy support, so that literacy is not a barrier to achievement or future opportunities.
The Library is managed by our Librarian Mr Smith, where Bedrock lessons take place for Years 7 and 8 and enrichment activities are offered at break, lunchtime and after school.

All pupils read as a form time activity and have access to our newly re-branded library resource The Bee Hive which is managed by our librarian Mrs Emberson. The Bee Hive is also the host of extra-curricular activities at break and lunch.
Bedrock learning: All students in years 7 and 8 participate in Bedrock Learning. Bedrock learning is a bespoke web-based too which enables students to acquire tier 2 vocabulary including academic verbs. Bedrock can be completed on any web browser with sound output. Year 7 students will complete some sessions in school as part of their Bee Hive induction.
Buzz words: Each week one tier 2 word is chosen to extend and improve student vocabulary. It is often topical and can be used in all subjects.
