Literacy

Here at St Thomas More we believe that Literacy is the cornerstone of all learning and is an essential aspect of success, both in school and beyond.

Literacy is a collaborative approach encompassed by all teachers in all subjects.  All teachers at the academy teach Literacy through the explicit teaching of key vocabulary, providing literacy feedback and promoting a love of reading.

(More Opportunities in Reading for All)

All pupils read as a form time activity and have access to our newly re-branded library resource The Bee Hive which is managed by our librarian Mrs Emberson. The Bee Hive is also the host of extra-curricular activities at break and lunch.

Bedrock learning: All students in years 7 and 8 participate in Bedrock Learning. Bedrock learning is a bespoke web-based too which enables students to acquire tier 2 vocabulary including academic verbs. Bedrock can be completed on any web browser with sound output. Year 7 students will complete some sessions in school as part of their Bee Hive induction.

Buzz words:  Each week one tier 2 word is chosen to extend and improve student vocabulary. It is often topical and can be used in all subjects.
